Additional public hearing on antenna
From the webmaster: It appears there’s one more step involved in Bridgewater College’s request for a special use permit to host a cellular antenna on its smokestack. Town Council will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. on September 9 on the request. Here are some useful links for reference:

so bridgewater college gets to rent out space on the smokestack for an antenna. not a big deal. naturally i wonder why the original notice had such broad language. putting up towers and antennas by right. etc. instead of just we want to put an antenna on that smokestack thats already there.

This sounds like a win-win situation to me! Maybe we will have town wide wi fi some day???

Colleges and Universities are prime places for antennas for telecom providers. There is naturally a lot of cell phone users at them and the need to have enough coverage grows every year. What a lot of people fail to understand, is that as there are more students, more citizens etc., the current installed antennas run out of capacity to carry all of the calls that go in and out on a daily basis. There are many examples all over the country and in Virginia of installations such as this. It is always good to utilize existing structures rather than build a new one. It is usually more favorable. The College has made a good decision here and they should not be degraded by citizens or anyone else, for providing the space for the installation.
Hopefully, the Town will also see the need for Wi-Fi service. Sprint is currently rolling this out in a lot of major markets as a test. We will see how it works.

Re #3: I wasn’t aware of anyone degrading the College or the Town for this decision. The previous 2 posters seem to indicate they felt it is a good idea. I agree too!

It is a very good idea. The previous 2 posters agree. My point is that a lot of the posters think it is NOT a good idea. Those posters need to do their homework rather than just attempting to make a pedantic observation.
I have a Public Hearing that night as well in Northern VA for such an installation. I hope that when I return I discover that it has passed!!!

Since I started the original thread I think I can summarize:
First, in the thread people have expressed support for locating antennas on existing structures, such as Bridgewater College’s smokestack. That’s the proposal that will be before Town Council.
Second, the antenna proposal is for a special use permit — for this one antenna, rather than a broad right to put up future antennas or towers. Several posters expressed support for this site-by-site approach.
Third, some posters expressed general support for antennas and towers to improve cellular signals in the area. They didn’t go into the details of the proposed changes but their point about signals is well taken.
So where did telecomconsultant’s “My point is that a lot of the posters think it is NOT a good idea” come from? Is it just a mistaken assumption that favoring site-by-site review means opposing all antennas?

that is a good summary traveler. it also matches up with what the town newsletter says. that council decided to go on a case by case basis. i also saw that the antenna wont be any higher than the smokestack. and thats because of airspace limitations imposed by the faa. so that concern has been answered as well.

Has anyone of you ever attended a public hearing about antenna/tower installations? The nut cases come out in hoards. They want their precious cell phones to work, but do not want to see the antennas or structures - let me know how that works out. A site-by-site review is a good idea, however it can also go over the limit. Ordinances are great ways to maintain conformity with any kind of installation. A lot of the posters did not agree with using the smokestack. Yes, there are limitations imposed by the FAA on each and every site built in the country, being that this is proposed to be installed on an existing structure keeps the carrier from having to file additional paperwork etc, thus cutting down on their time to get the site operational.

Then show us one. Give us a link.
Or stop making that claim. (Please

well then. let us all agree to denounce those mindless opponents of cell antennas. even if we cannot find any of them in bridgewater.
