Liberal books to Walmart?
I noticed a letter to the Daily News-Record lamenting the absence of “liberal” or “progressive” books in the book section of our local Walmart. There was even a reference to censorship.
I recommend calling the manager, Brian Cipolletti, with the suggestion to carry more left-leaning books (438-0349). Walmart is very much interested in profits, and if there are a lot of progressives out there seeking left-wing reading material at the Dayton Walmart, Brian would want to know about that. With Walmart, it’s all about profit and stocking what customers want.
So what is it, folks? Does the Dayton Walmart stock very little lefty reading because its customers don’t want it, or because the manager is a conservative willing to leave money on the table to suppress opposing voices? (Or is the manager just mistaken, misreading his left-leaning audience and unaware of the keen insights of DNR letter writers?)

I do not trust Walmart on very much but I do trust them to stock what customers want, or what they can persuade customers to buy.

I saw that letter and pretty much shook my head. If we don’t have any more serious concerns than that, then we are in a sorry state.
As a private business, Walmart may carry what ever titles they please… it is not censorship. There are plenty of book vendors in the area that will carry the type of literature the commentator wants. I tend to agree… if Walmart thinks it will turn a buck, they will carry more more liberal titles. Perhaps this speaks more to the popularity of left leaning literature? Just a question folks.
I for one cast a shadow on Walmart’s doors as infrequently as possible…. and I don’t go there seeking reading material… there are much better venues in the area for that. If you don’t like a business’ political (real or imagined) or socio-economic stance vote with your feet. With a behemoth like Walmart, that may not make a big impression…. but it sure makes me feel better.
