Happy Independence Day!
While we’re at it with the hot dogs and fireworks, I hope we’ll all stop and consider this: Our nation was founded on the idea that the people are sovereign. We may delegate that sovereignty to the government to do things on our behalf. If we ever fully buy into this idea that the government is our master and not our servant, we are doomed. How do we show government who’s boss? By voting for people who will serve the people, and voting them out if they don’t.

I agree with all this, and would just note that the people have the right to vote in a compassionate government that will deliver on the promise of a decent income and health care for all.

Sure, the people have the right to vote in a “compassionate” government that will promise a decent income and health care for all. But will that government deliver on the promise, or just blunder around taking away freedom under the pretense of “decent income and health care for all”? And will that really be “compassionate” in the end?

It is not the government’s place to insure health care for all and “decent incomes”. That is the function of socialism not a democracy. Too much “compassion” will only instill a dependency for “more government compassion”. Out of control social programs are a main reasons we are deep in debt and one of the main reasons California is near fiscal failure.

Suppose “we the people” want to use constitutional means to insure health care and decent incomes for all. Is there some law higher than the constitution that says we are not allowed to do it?

No higher law than the Constitution, I agree. However, does the Constitution encourage the massive control of the lives of Americans we are now experiencing? I fail to see how one can think that government control is the answer to anything.
As it stands now, the EPA is restricting offered help in the gulf until in can determine if the efforts are detrimental to the environment (as if the spill isn’t bad enough), OSHA is restricting the amount of time able bodied adults can work on clean up (regardless of their desires), Coast Guard is limiting the help from foreign ships because of an 1920 law restricting their presents in “our ” waters.
The government is not allowing the governors of the affected states to make efforts to control he damage, efforts that experienced seamen of the area feel will help.
This is not a critique of Mr. Obama because Mr. Bush created the Homeland Security fiasco which has done it’s best to intrude on our basic freedoms.
The point being that the government, because of it’s overbearing laws and regulations cannot get out of it’s own way to help. Putting them in charge of health care and wage control would only result the opposite results you are desiring, Traveler.
I challenge anyone to think of any facet of your life that isn’t controlled by some government law or regulation.
