I agree that very big business gets its way -- but only when it gets the government to do its bidding. A government limited to its proper constitutional role wouldn't have any goodies to pass out to big business. It would ensure national defense and maintain order, and that's about it. Limited government most certainly would not think it had the authority to order everyone to buy insurance.

Nothing will change. We'll get to continue to pay 10-60% a year higher premiums for poorer and poorer service. What very big business wants very big business gets.

He also greatly misstated the savings....his number was far greater than the CBO figure. I don't think any of us believe for a minute that a huge new entitlement program will not cost the taxpayer more in the long run. There ain't no free lunch.
It isn't a matter of who gets credit or blame, people are opposing it because it is too massive and just a bad bill. The push to pass it in a hurry is because the Congress goes on recess soon. If they go home and get another earful from the masses, it's chance of passing will be greatly reduced.
I think the best solution to the mess we've gotten into, is for the public to stop expecting the government to take care of us, cradle to grave. Hasn't work out too well yet.

the presidents speech today was puzzling to me. he talked about how dishonest the health insurance companies are. and yet he is pushing a bill that makes everybody buy their product. will the proposed reform help or hurt health insurers profits.

Congress has gotten rid of the public option which was the one major program that could have encouraged private insurance companies to modify the price of their premiums, IMHO. The current bill would mandate all citizens to have health insurance with little governmental control over the cost of the premiums. This should make the health insurance and drug companies very happy and supportive of the bill. However, many of the conservatives (Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats) who have had an influence on this bill will probably vote against it just to prevent President Obama from claiming credit for it. Either way, the public has been bamboozled.

I don't think any could view Congress as reformers nor should anyone want them controlling our health care. These are the people than can't run the post office, Amtrack nor regulate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. They are bankrupting Social Security and Medicare and worse, the entire country by continually spending money that we don't have.

i am surprised we have gotten to this point. where the whole question is whether to spend billions of dollars adding millions of people to a costly and inefficient system. with very little attention to reforming that system. where did the reformers go.

something worth remembering. it takes a lot of effort to run a news operation. oh it is easy enough to get people to write opinion pieces. but who will attend the planning commission on a cold night in november. and keep doing that month after month with little or no pay.
