comcast high speed customers

June 15, 2010 By: mcgill Category: Buzz

A while back, Comcast Internet changed to a new security system. It required us to make some updates and in the process added things like new/additional toolbars and search engines. All of which took me a while to figure how to remove. As part of the transition, they are providing Norton backup. Because of the aforementioned issues, I have not activated it.
Has anyone activated the back up service, and if so, what happens? How does it work? I will greatly appreciate any advice.

Quarles/7 Eleven confirmed

June 15, 2010 By: tink Category: Buzz

I read in the Daily News that Quarles has sold all 4 local stores to 7 Eleven. Not sure when changes will take affect though. It listed the locations as Bridgewater, Harrisonburg (both 33 east and west), and Broadway. Here are some points from the article.

–14 of 20 stores in VA will become 7 Eleven’s
–other 6 will be sold to independent dealers
–Quarles is only based in VA
–It will continue it’s propane and fuel oil distribution
–Bullets, located in Bwater and Hburg (33 east) have closed

Kind of sad to see this, but I do miss having a 7 Eleven in Bwater.

Say it isn’t so: Mrs. Rowe’s closing

May 27, 2010 By: webmaster Category: Buzz, For Facebook friends

I wish it weren’t true, but Mrs. Rowe’s Country Buffet at Mt. Crawford has closed for regular customers. It is continuing to honor previously made banquet commitments. Initial reports aren’t clear on whether they’ll attempt to continue as a catering-banquet business for the long haul.

oil spill and the press

May 25, 2010 By: mcgill Category: Buzz

If the Republicans were still in charge during this oil spill, the press would be screaming for their heads.
Now, very little is being said about the government’s poor response. Amazing how things change when the press’ preferred party is in power.
It’s unbelievable that Louisiana is still waiting the federal governments permission to protect it’s own shores.

Nice tribute to Philip Stone

May 21, 2010 By: webmaster Category: Buzz, For Facebook friends

There’s a nice piece on Philip Stone, retiring president of Bridgewater College, at the Staunton News-Leader: http://www.newsleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20105190312 . He has done a lot for the college and the community, and I know we all wish him the best.

Liberal books to Walmart?

May 07, 2010 By: Libertarian Category: Buzz

I noticed a letter to the Daily News-Record lamenting the absence of “liberal” or “progressive” books in the book section of our local Walmart. There was even a reference to censorship.

I recommend calling the manager, Brian Cipolletti, with the suggestion to carry more left-leaning books (438-0349). Walmart is very much interested in profits, and if there are a lot of progressives out there seeking left-wing reading material at the Dayton Walmart, Brian would want to know about that. With Walmart, it’s all about profit and stocking what customers want.

So what is it, folks? Does the Dayton Walmart stock very little lefty reading because its customers don’t want it, or because the manager is a conservative willing to leave money on the table to suppress opposing voices? (Or is the manager just mistaken, misreading his left-leaning audience and unaware of the keen insights of DNR letter writers?)
